Had to learn awk for a work assignment, so the natural choice was the O'Riely book. After struggling with it I had realized that as a novice UNIX power tools programmer, I needed a basic-to-intermediate level text with lots of examples. That's where Quigley's came to the rescue.Some positives about the text are as follows1, every concept and programming construct is followed by an example2, the sample data file (to try the different programming techniques against) are repeated multiple times. This saves time and effort and avoids the hassle of flipping back and forth in the book3, the material has been covered in just the right depth & breadthThe plan going forward is to use "Unix by example" as the stepping stone to advanced awk, sed, and Korn shell programming texts.The second phase of the plan is to buy, read, and try every example from Quigley's Perl text before investing in Oreily's counterpart text.All in all, a great introduction to the Unix power tools

Of all the computer books I own (I am a UNIX/Linux system administrator so I have a large library), this is the only book that I kept buying the newest edition when it came out (this is the 5th time I have bought the book). The 1st edition and this edition are the only books I have ever worn out. If you write shell scripts this book is a MUST HAVE for your library. The examples are plentiful and well explained. I am currently training a few junior system admins Linux in general and shell scripting. I have come close to ordering them to buy this book.I admit, I only really use about 1/2 of the book for BASH, SED, and AWK but still, I can not recommend it enough.

I must say, the reviews before me did not lie. being a fairly new programmer, i knew NOTHING about shells or what exactly the purpose of the terminal was.. there was a review on the back of the book saying that "...Makes first-time shell programmers productive in just 15 pages" i would say that's a slight exaggeration. but certainly by the end of the first chapter you'll have a solid understanding of the different shells, and the basic shell commands =). I'd certainly recommend this book to anyone looking to understand what shells are about. And for that matter, i'd recommend this book to anyone looking to write shell scripts. the style of teaching in this book is great =)

Amazing book, got it in excellent conditions saving a lot from the normal price.The book is written in an easy and smooth way, giving the reader the choice to start anywhere he prefer, since the book has various sections that can be studied in any order (if you have at keast the basics of unix or linux, otherwise is better to start from the beginning); and i never found a book like this; where i can find the answers in one place, instead of getting 4 different books plus google :)ultra suggested, in particular for who has courses in unix and shell scripting at the college like me

The author, Ellie Quigley, knows what she is writing about, and her providing examples along the learning path are right on. I like everything in the book, and I bought an earlier edition to use when I was starting my career as a Software Engineer. That edition is now well used, and some of the pages are missing. That's why I bought this newer edition ! I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn about Unix shells, and how to use them effectively.

I only knew introductory linux. I feel pretty confident in bash. Great problem sets. Unlike some textbooks, this one makes a concerted effort to explain each line of example code.

My co-workers always come to me to solve any complex unix script. Credit goes to author of this book. Thank you.

I like the comprehensive explanatory notes, especially the pattern of explaining each example scripts, line-by-line. I've not really got down to using the accompanying CD, to know how well the codes would run, but to the extent I've used the book, it been satisfactory!

About the Author

Donald L. Anderson, PhD, University of Colorado, teaches organization development and organization design at the University of Denver. He is the author of the text Organization Development (4th ed., Sage Publications, 2017) and editor of Cases and Exercises in Organization Development & Change (2nd ed., Sage Publications, 2017). He is a practicing organization development consultant and has consulted internally and externally with a wide variety of organizations, including Fortune 500 corporations, small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions. Dr. Anderson’s research interest is in discourse in organizational and institutional settings, and his studies of organizational discourse and change have been published in journals such as the Journal of Organizational Change Management, Gestion, and Journal of Business and Technical Communication. This text served as required reading when I took Dr. Anderson's Organizational Development course during the Spring 2013 quarter at the University of Denver. Despite being largely disappointed with the majority of required reading throughout my graduate study, this was by far the best and most helpful text. Dr. Anderson does a wonderful job of synthesizing what many OD, consulting, and organizational design experts say and compiling it into a solid text. The text combines solid theory with realistic case studies and even personal anecdotes. Instead of being a generic, monotone work, it is almost as if you can hear his voice and passion for the subject. Chapters and sections are very well-organized, making it easy to revisit previous sections. He also provides some solid insider advice and is quite honest about what works and what doesn't. The built-in case studies offer many chances to practice what you just learned. I highly recommend this text to be used in conjunction with Cases and Exercises in Organization Development & Change. Finally, Dr. Anderson does well to appeal to learners with a visual sense by including many easy to follow diagrams and charts.Perhaps my only critical advice would be to include a section at the end of the text with a graphical organizer which breaks down the different types of interventions and categorizes them by individual, group, and organization.

It's not the text book author's fault if a reader can't remember what they read. Anderson's work is a primer on organization development. If you have the slightest inclination to do any kind of organization development whether internal or external this is the book for you. I rented it as a text book for a doctoral level class on organizational theory and group behavior and I'm buying it outright for future reference use as my consulting career gains momentum. I've used it extensively for the last eight weeks and it worth every penny.

I'm visually impaired and need the larger font of a digital book. This works great for me and i have no problem with turning pages. Plus when referencing you can highlight, copy, paste and have a 90% solution to a citation. This book may not have quite all the digital feature of some other textbooks I've purchased, but works just fine with my PC, Surface and Android App. The only problem is the android app has no page numbers, only reference numbers. The PC app has page numbers at the bottom of the screen. This and tell fact it is a little dry is why it receives 4 stars.

This is a relatively brief introduction to the study of organization development (OD). What is organization development? The text notes that (page 2) ". . .an area of academic study and professional practice focused on making organizations better. . . ." This is an interdisciplinary field of study, drawing upon work from business, psychology, human resource management, and so on. The author notes further that (Page 3): "Organization development is the process of increasing organizational effectiveness, and facilitating personal and organizational change through the use of interventions driven by social and behavioral science knowledge."How does this volume try to outline the study of organization development? First, it covers basic elements of the field. Second, it provides a variety of case studies.The volume begins by discussing the nature and history and values of OD. Later subjects include the consultation process of OD practitioners, the nature of organizational change, diagnosis of organizations, intervention tactics, sustaining organizational change, and so on.A useful introduction to the subject. . . .

This digital book is the WORST. DO NOT GET IT! I thought it was my Kindle app but tried it on 3 devices. Then one of my classmates started the discusson in our class....everyone that got it in digital format had the same issues. The pages flip constantly - sometimes 30-40 pages. There are no page numbers, just locations. Save yourself the frustration. Do not get the digital Kindle version. It is bad.
