PLEASE read this title aloud to your little ones before they're old enough to realize that fighting rabbits aren't "cool". I read this first volume aloud to my 6-year-old and 8-year-old and they consistently urged me to read it night after night. It only took about 3 weeks, but they and I both looked forward to hearing more about these beloved characters. If your kids want to read it for themselves, I would say 8- to 10-year-olds should be able to handle it quite well. There are no bad words, the violence is light, and the magic and "witch" are both the good kind. The scary parts are handled without too much fuss and the bad guys (called Gorm) don't get a lot of dialog or excessive description that might cause more sensitive kids to have nightmares. All in all, the plot is rich, the characters are realistic and developed, and you truly begin to yearn for the next chapter as you lose yourself in the story. It's rare to find a book that I love as much as the kids do, so hopefully you'll agree if you decide to pick up a copy. Highly recommended!

A good story is a good story no matter how old you are. While far past my teen years (really far), I enjoy a good read regardless of the Target audience. This was a good story. It was a well told tale of growing up fast and finding courage beyond one's years. Those of us who grew up learning grammar, the failure of using past tense when it's called for is annoying (for me) and distressing (for unfortunate children who will grow up unable to adequate express themselves. Normally encountering "saying" when "said" is called for means closing the book for good. Despite the grammatical faux pas, the delightful story kept me reading.

My 9 year old daughter and I both loved this book. She read it first, for school. She's not big on fantasy (is not a fan of Harry Potter, to my disappointment) but I think her love of animals drew her in, even though these rabbits are essentially humans. It's an entertaining read for the whole family - the scariest parts are broken up with humorous interruptions from the narrator. It's a fun, thrilling story about a rabbit who transforms from a lazy, spoiled kid who doesn't pay attention to his studies into a heroic, courageous and clever leader. We can't wait to read the second book!

A wonderful coming of age children's fantasy with plenty of danger and action and funny moments in between. The wriiting was simple, but pleasant, perfect for middle grade readers. Young readers may be a little scared by the antagonists, but I think they may still enjoy it if they read with their family. I also really enjoy the storytelling style of the book, it being a tale told by a cranky bard to a bunch of excitiable bunny children. It really helped lighten the mood after the particularly frightening moments, and really reminded me of Tolkien's storytelling. The storytelling style also helped empasize the "legend" of the main character and how he became a hero to his people. I can't wait to read the continuation of this series!

I have a 4th grader and sometime it is difficult to get him to read. This was a great book. He truly enjoyed it! I also read it, just so that we can have a mom / son book club. Easy read, some new words. The best part of the book, is that it action packed. The book draws you in right away and at time you will even find it hard to put down. Can't wait for the next book in series!

This book is great for young kids. I read it to my son who is 6 and he LOVED it! For kids 10 and older they would be fine to read it on their own. There are a few parts that are slightly violent (animals get hurt) so for young kids under 6 it could be a bit disturbing. But it is SO well written, the characters are so strong, the story moves along very quickly and the creativity is delightful. It has many elements of the Hobbit as well as elements from the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Kieran Larwood has clearly used those classics to motivate him to write an equally captivating and original book. I have now read all 3 in the series to my son - we could not read them fast enough! - and we are waiting patiently for the 4th to come out.

My 9 year old finished this in 2 days and we have the second book in the series ordered already. She loved it and can't wait for book 2 to arrive.

I can't wait to share this with my students. It's perfect for fantasy lovers, animal lovers, and especially for kids who are not ready for Watership Down.
